Our Story

How it all started...

For 150 years, Hope Church has been part of the story of South Haven. And there’s a part of our history we especially love.

The same year South Haven’s first lighthouse was built, Hope Church began its ministry. One was built to guide ships safely to shore. The other was planted to point people to the hope we have in Jesus.

A lot has changed since then. The original lighthouse has been replaced. So has our first church building. South Haven has changed, and so has Hope Church.

But our purpose hasn’t.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” — Matthew 5:14

For 150 years, generations of people at Hope Church have tried to live that out. Loving our neighbors, serving our community, caring for people, and pointing to Jesus.

We’re incredibly grateful for the people who came before us. But we’re not here simply to celebrate our past.

We want to keep shining.

Because South Haven still needs hope. People still need community. And we still believe the greatest hope we can offer anyone is Jesus.

Where we are headed...

Our hope for Hope Church is pretty simple: we want to be a place where people can belong, grow, and reach beyond themselves. Not a place where you have to pretend. Not a place where you need to have faith—or life—all figured out before you walk through the doors.

Just a community of imperfect people learning to follow Jesus together.

BELONG
There’s a place for you here. Whatever your story looks like, you are welcome at Hope.
You may have followed Jesus your entire life. You may be coming back to church after years away. You may have questions, doubts, hurts, or no idea what you believe about God yet.

That’s okay.

We want Hope to be a place where you can be known, build real friendships, ask honest questions, and discover the love and grace of Jesus.

You don’t have to have everything figured out to belong.

GROW
Come as you are. Just don’t expect to stay there. We believe Jesus meets us where we are, but He loves us too much to leave us unchanged.
Following Jesus is a lifelong journey of becoming more like Him. That happens as we learn Scripture, pray, worship, ask questions, build relationships, and actually put our faith into practice.
Whether through Sunday mornings, groups, classes, or simply doing life with other people, we want to help you take your next step.

Because none of us has arrived. We’re growing together.

REACH
The church doesn’t exist for itself. Jesus sends us into the world to love our neighbors, care for people who are hurting, serve those who are often overlooked, and bring hope wherever we go. Sometimes that happens across the world. More often, it happens right here in South Haven. In our neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and everyday relationships.

We don’t want to simply talk about the love of Jesus. We want to live it.

That’s the kind of church we want Hope to be:

A place to BELONG.
A place to GROW.
A people who REACH.
